Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

As a member of the Advocacy team, the Director of Government Advocacy represents the GCP, and its affiliates/partners as deemed appropriate by GCP management. The Director serves as a lead advocate for state and local legislative and regulatory affairs, primarily focusing on COSE small business members and issues, and interacts with all levels of government, as required by the job. The Director will also perform a variety of responsibilities in support of the Senior Vice President and the Advocacy team. Tasks include managing complex administrative tasks, meeting coordination, support duties and special projects. 

SALARY RANGE: $92,000 - $102,000

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Lead the review and strategy development for legislative issues that impact the business community. These issues include, but are not limited to, workforce, energy, health care, regulations, taxes, and workers’ compensation. 
  • Work with key staff of GCP, partners, and affiliates to identify issues of concern or opportunities and develop strategies to secure favorable legislation and regulations.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with state legislators representing Northeast Ohio, legislators in leadership positions in the Ohio General Assembly, key members of the state administration (Governor’s office and state agencies), local/regional elected officials, and other staff members.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with members of the GCP Government Affairs Council and participate in Council meetings.
  • Direct the management of COSE Small Business Forum meetings. Act as a resource to staff on the coordination and planning of these meetings. Conduct research and develop briefing materials for volunteers involved with those activities. Support and manage issue related task teams as needed.
  • Assist in the revision and publication of the GCP Public Policy Agenda and other department publications.
  • Participate in National Small Business Association (NSBA) issue committee calls, attend quarterly NSBA Board meetings, and support GCP members as needed.
  • Direct the development and production of the annual COSE Day at the Capitol agenda, NSBA Washington Presentation, and other small business advocacy activities.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

  • Represent the GCP in programs and forums as a speaker, moderator or other participant as directed by the Executive Vice President.
  • Assist in writing communications for GCP Board of Directors, Executive Committee, Government Affairs Council, GCP Investors and partners.
  • Work in partnership with other Advocacy staff members to produce content for GCP website, newsletters, blogs, social media, and other communications.
  • Assist on federal affairs initiatives as directed by the Senior Vice President.
  • Write and coordinate with the Marketing and Communications teams on advocacy marketing efforts, press releases and media opportunities.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • 5 – 7 years of experience in government relations or legislative process.
